Caledon Oxbridge General Q&A for 2021-01-31

15:00 Carl Metropolitan It is 3 PM, SL Time, and it is time to start.
15:00 Larky (larkylouz) Hi Carl. Hi everyone.
15:00 Carl Metropolitan Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, Virtual Worlds, and anything vaguely related to any of the above. I'm also good at trivia questions.
15:00 Carl Metropolitan If we don't know the answer, we can Google it. In other words, we know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer.
15:00 Carl Metropolitan Now that the canned intro is over, it's Andrea's turn to make announcements.
15:01 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) As some of you may know, The Anniversary of COU was this last week. I believe it has been here 12 years now...We have today at 4pm a combo fundraiser dance and anniversary dance. Caledon Oxbridge Village (136,189,1377)
15:02 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) The theme is science. Weird or mad.
15:02 Lightweaver Balan qualifies the last two.
15:02 Gronk Seriman Ooo!
15:02 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) I hope you can join us as we dance to the tunes by DJ Sasha.
15:02 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Back to you Carl
15:03 Carl Metropolitan What is the date of the COU anniversary?
15:03 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) It was last Tuesday i think
15:03 Larky (larkylouz) And what year? I've lost track!
15:03 Carl Metropolitan January 26th?
15:04 StormBlaster (masterblaster) What's a combo fundraiser dance, please?
15:04 Carl Metropolitan I don't remember. I was too busy getting everything up and running.
15:04 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) We celebrate both a continued function and when things got started.
15:05 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Things have changed over the years
15:05 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) Yes ^-^
15:06 lovejoy2199 Greetings everyone.
15:06 Carl Metropolitan I remember [just before we opened] trying to get all the tutorial posters done in a three week period when the person who was going to do them flaked on me after assuring me everything was on track :)
15:06 Carl Metropolitan Hello Kamilah.
15:07 Carl Metropolitan Lets go to questions now.
15:07 Carl Metropolitan Rather than me rambling about ancient times.
15:07 Carl Metropolitan Questions?
15:08 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Demands? Qualifications?
15:08 Gronk Seriman Carl, I've noticed the Freebie display is getting quite impressive. Are things still being added occasionally?
15:09 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) It seems to be a popular spot as well.
15:09 Carl Metropolitan No. I have not been in world very much recently. I do have more things I can and should add. I also need to find some more clothing that would work for mesh avatars.
15:10 Carl Metropolitan I can find clothing that is full perm, and has a license that allows me to give out no transfer copies. I just can't find clothing like that which is G-rated :)
15:10 Gronk Seriman Gah.
15:11 Carl Metropolitan I am serious. It is hard.
15:11 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) No doubt about that.
15:11 Carl Metropolitan Most places have very rigid license restrictions against people giving out copies (no transfer) of their full perm mesh.
15:12 Carl Metropolitan And as we don't have anyone on staff who can do clothing and rigging, we have to look in the full perm for resale world.
15:12 Larky (larkylouz) What about persuading some designers to donate items? Like Free Dove and FS Island?
15:13 Larky (larkylouz) And probably other places as well.
15:13 Carl Metropolitan It would be a good idea. I no longer have any contacts among SL designers, though.
15:14 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) And they would have to fit the theme as well, I gather.
15:14 Kara2016 C&F?
15:14 Carl Metropolitan Not really. I would be happy with a mix of themed and non-themed.
15:14 Carl Metropolitan What does C&F mean?
15:14 Kara2016 Cog & Fleur.
15:15 Larky (larkylouz) Perhaps someone here would be interested in taking on the task of working with Carl to solicit items from mesh designers?
15:16 Sandie Harbour I would be willing to try but have very little influence.
15:16 Carl Metropolitan First I need to check with Wordsmith to make sure I am permitted to negotiate and contact designers on behalf of Oxbridge.
15:16 Larky (larkylouz) Sandie, just put them offguard with some really bad puns, and then nick the stuff when they aren't looking! ;^)
15:17 lovejoy2199 LMAO!
15:17 Kara2016 giggles.
15:17 Gronk Seriman smiles.
15:17 Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) Carl Metropolitan gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway.
15:18 Sandie Harbour Wait! My puns are bad?!
15:18 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Or Sandie might just smile :-)
15:18 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Thank you Carl.
15:18 Larky (larkylouz) All puns are bad, by definition!
15:18 Sandie Harbour So my smile is bad too?
15:18 Larky (larkylouz) Oh,no. Your smile is lovely.
15:18 Carl Metropolitan That is my 2500L$ a month donation for January and the rest of 2021 — 30, 000L$
15:19 Larky (larkylouz) Holy shit, Carl. Thank you!
15:19 Carl Metropolitan So now I don't have to think about it until next January.
15:19 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) My gosh.
15:19 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Thank you.
15:19 Carl Metropolitan It is just paying in advance my normal 2500L$/month donation.
15:19 Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway.
15:19 Gronk Seriman "Dat coin is on fiaaaaaahhh!"
15:19 Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) badgerofzen gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway.
15:19 Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway.
15:19 Carl Metropolitan This way I don't have to remember it every month. I'd forgotten in January and now it is the 31st
15:20 Carl Metropolitan Thank you Zaida
15:20 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Thank you badger frozen
15:20 Carl Metropolitan Thank you Badger
15:20 Carl Metropolitan And thank you Elfbiter.
15:20 lovejoy2199 sings 'Burn Baby Burn. Disco inferno"
15:20 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Thank you Elfbiter
15:20 Oxbridge Donation Coin R1 (Alternate Lecture Hall) Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) gave a generous donation to help support classes and tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge Gateway.
15:20 Sandie Harbour Leadership by example.
15:20 Carl Metropolitan Thank you Courtney
15:20 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Thank you Ms Whitemore
15:20 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) ^-^
15:20 Kara2016 =^.^=
15:21 Carl Metropolitan Let's get back to questions and answers!
15:21 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) raises her hand.
15:22 Carl Metropolitan Please ask Courtney.
15:23 Carl Metropolitan This is why the typing animation is so valuable. You can tell when someone is typing a long question as opposed to have crashed on you :)
15:23 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) I don't understand why a complexity from the avatar, changes constantly and even being the same complexity. Sometimes it says that maybe no one could be able to see my avatar and sometimes, it says that everyone is able to see my avatar.
15:24 Carl Metropolitan Avatar complexity is determined by the textures and "land impact" of the mesh (or in some case sculpties) that you are wearing.
15:24 Carl Metropolitan Scripts have some impact, too.
15:25 Carl Metropolitan But it is mostly the number of triangles your clothing, hair, shoes, jewelry comes down to.
15:25 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) Ah land and scripts impact... now I understand why it changes many times
15:25 Kamilah Hauptmann I've seen a few avatars over the years with more data packed into them than the entire city of Stormwind in World of Warcraft.
15:26 Tamarynd Old jewelry and shoes.
15:26 Carl Metropolitan The other major impact is that the Avatar Complexity algorithm hates sculpties.
15:26 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) still remembers when visitor in Oxbridge with a hairdo with one scripted per strand of hair...
15:27 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) What do you mean with sculpties?
15:27 Carl Metropolitan So if you are wearing any jewelry, shoes, hair, or clothing parts made of the,, your Avatar Complexity rating will shoot way up.
15:28 Carl Metropolitan Sculpties are an older "hack" introduced by LL that allowed for non-prim building with results that were very low Land Impact, and looked like (in most cases) lower poly mesh.
15:28 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) Thanks.
15:28 Sandie Harbour I try to keep mine below 100K. Jewelry seems to be high in complexity.
15:29 Carl Metropolitan Courtney, the best way to tell what you are wearing that is causing a huge Avatar Complexity score is to put on a problem outfit, then go to your Outfits window, and look at the complexity score for each item there.
15:29 Gronk Seriman The number changes with your and everybody else's computer power, too. Everybody can see you. Then somebody enters with a cheap laptop set pretty low. Then you get the notice not everybody can see you.
15:29 Carl Metropolitan You need to go to the "Wearing" tab of the "Outfits" window.
15:29 Kamilah Hauptmann Wear what you want for photographs and small venues, really.
15:30 Carl Metropolitan The individual item Avatar Complexities are listed there on the right.
15:30 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) Thanks ☻
15:30 Kamilah Hauptmann did not notice that before, oh neat.
15:31 Carl Metropolitan Most designers now build to have their creations work for lower avatar complexity. Older mesh stuff can be very high in Avatar Complexity.
15:31 Kamilah Hauptmann Beware the LOD factoring though.
15:31 Carl Metropolitan I should update my avatar; for example. Each of my shoes is coming in at 17,552!
15:31 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) Okie.
15:31 Carl Metropolitan And my old sculptie hair is at 38,000.
15:31 Kamilah Hauptmann Some builders go for low complexity and low land impact by omitting the lower LOD models.
15:32 Carl Metropolitan I'm still in total under 100,000.
15:32 Kamilah Hauptmann And in doing that, the models disappear as you move the camera away from the object or explode into triangles.
15:32 Sandie Harbour I'm just under 50K
15:33 Kamilah Hauptmann Common advice is to change your 'LOD factor" to a higher value which will introduce all sorts of new lag to your SL experience as your viewer tries to render an earring on the other side of the sim.
15:33 Carl Metropolitan If you want to see how your Avatar Complexity compares with other people's you can go to the Advanced menu, then the Performance Tools sub-menu, and select "Show avatar complexity information"
15:33 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) 74000+
15:34 Carl Metropolitan I hope that helped.
15:34 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) Yes I'm seeing it. Thanks for the help.
15:34 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) Of course it has helped me ☻
15:34 Carl Metropolitan Great.
15:34 Tamarynd Oh dear... I'm almost 70K. My hat and shoes are half of it
15:35 Carl Metropolitan Okay. Next question!
15:35 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) The jetpack is probably very primmy.
15:37 Carl Metropolitan Pop open your Outfits / Wearing and check, Elfbiter.
15:37 Lightweaver Balan is there a similar method to determine scripts in what you're individually wearing?
15:39 Carl Metropolitan I don't know of one. I should.
15:39 Kamilah Hauptmann I found this in the Avatar-> Avatar Health menu https://puu.sh/HcqCO/fb2669e4c2.png
15:39 Carl Metropolitan Let me think.
15:39 Carl Metropolitan There you go. Kamilah has it.
15:39 Lightweaver Balan thanks :)
15:39 Kamilah Hauptmann Gave me that tidy little list.
15:40 Gronk Seriman There are tons of script meters in SL. And on the Marketplace. There is one down in the Plaza on campus.
15:40 Carl Metropolitan The Avatar/Avatar Health/Scripts gives you scripts by item.
15:40 Kamilah Hauptmann Note script meters will tell you the maximum memory allocation, not the real use.
15:41 Lightweaver Balan Indeed.
15:41 Carl Metropolitan That can help you with figuring out items that are causing issues.
15:41 Lightweaver Balan Why I asked. Lol.
15:41 Carl Metropolitan Thank you Kamilah.
15:41 Courtney Whitemore (courtwhite) Yes :)
15:41 Carl Metropolitan Okay. Next question?
15:41 Lightweaver Balan brill.
15:41 Kamilah Hauptmann made a little widget that toggled a prim full of 50 scripts between 4k memory limit and 64k limit and toggled it until I got banned. >:)
15:42 Carl Metropolitan Don't do that :)
15:42 Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) laughs.
15:42 Kamilah Hauptmann Mew.
15:42 Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) Sounds like something you'd do
15:42 Carl Metropolitan Any other questions this evening?
15:43 Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) what are this weeks winning lottery number? I really want to quit my job
15:43 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) I must be off. Setup the event but forgot to setup me. Hope to see you there.
15:43 Carl Metropolitan Bye Andrea.
15:43 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) What is the luminosity of Sandie's smile?
15:44 Gronk Seriman Unmeasurable.
15:44 Carl Metropolitan 06-20-21-41-51 / 05
15:44 Sandie Harbour blushing.
15:44 Carl Metropolitan I hope that helps, Zaida
15:44 Kara2016 I am off too RL for a little while... then a dance...
15:44 Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood
15:44 Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) Thanks Carl.
15:44 Carl Metropolitan It is the best in random numbers :)
15:45 Carl Metropolitan Since it looks like we are out of questions, I think this is a good point to adjourn for the evening and for me to go prepare the transcript for Wordsmith.
15:45 Carl Metropolitan Thank you all for coming.
15:45 Carl Metropolitan See you next Sunday!
