Caledon Oxbridge General Q&A for 2021-02-07

15:01 Carl Metropolitan Okay. It is 3 PM, SL Time, and it is time to start.
15:01 Carl Metropolitan Hello Andrea
15:01 Carl Metropolitan Welcome to this Sunday's Oxbridge General Q&A. Andrea and I are here to answer any of your questions about Second Life, Caledon, Oxbridge, Steampunk, Linden Lab, Virtual Worlds, and anything vaguely related to any of the above.
15:01 Carl Metropolitan If we don't know the answer, we can Google it. In other words, we know where to look, or at least can probably put you in touch with someone who does know the answer.
15:02 Carl Metropolitan Andrea will start us off with any social/fundraising announcements.
15:02 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Umm... hi.
15:02 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Fundraiser next Sunday. Should be valentines themed. So come join us with DJ Sasha DJing.
15:03 Cychwynn fun :)
15:03 Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) shakes her piggy bank and looks sad as a moth flies out.
15:03 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Donations are never needed at any event I put on. You coming is enough. We need people to come.
15:04 Carl Metropolitan Does anyone else have any sort of social announcements they want to make?
15:04 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Well, I still host the Writers' Meeting.
15:04 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Oh there will be another story time audio event Monday night at 7:30 pm.
15:05 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Yes, in the reading room for Mr Elf and myself.
15:05 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) and the cats :-)
15:05 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) yes lots of cats to pet
15:05 Larky (larkylouz) :^)
15:05 Carl Metropolitan What day and time is the writer's meeting?
15:05 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Thursdays 11:00 AM SLT
15:06 Carl Metropolitan Thank you.
15:06 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) So far I have missed only one.
15:06 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) We will be having Keeba Tammas and the Tiny Maniacs near the end of the month at Caledonian Nights.
15:06 Carl Metropolitan Thank you Andrea.
15:06 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) nods.
15:07 Carl Metropolitan Time for the main event: Questions and Answers!
15:07 Carl Metropolitan You all ask questions; Andrea and I answer.
15:09 Carl Metropolitan Gronk seems to have one.
15:09 Gronk Seriman Waiting for textures to download has been a chore. But things seem to have gotten a lot better in the last few days. Anybody else notice that?
15:09 Carl Metropolitan Hello Lyn.
15:10 Carl Metropolitan Presumably, LL is still working to fix their new cloud based architecture.
15:10 Carl Metropolitan I'm told teleports were very unreliable, and slowly got better, too.
15:11 Gronk Seriman Good.
15:11 lovejoy2199 Ohhh...So what is why I am having problems.
15:11 Lyn (lyn.navarita) Weird pews.
15:11 lovejoy2199 I was thinking it was my computer.
15:12 Carl Metropolitan Lyn, they are part of the structure here. And the entire floor can be flipped to create a flat surface for building classes.
15:13 Carl Metropolitan It is really funny if you do it when everyone is sitting down, but kind of disruptive.
15:13 Carl Metropolitan Okay. Next question?
15:14 Carl Metropolitan Anyone?
15:15 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Sault?
15:15 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Chirp, chirp.
15:15 SaultSage I have been off SL for a number of years and I come back and there are these mesh bodies.
15:15 SaultSage and I am not sure I have sorted that all out.
15:16 Lyn (lyn.navarita) I help new ladies with classic vs mesh. I can share some Notecards I use.
15:16 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) I was there when mesh came and still not sure what to do with it..
15:16 SaultSage That would be great.
15:16 Carl Metropolitan What questions do you have about mesh bodies specifically?
15:16 Lyn (lyn.navarita) Anything for a RPO fan ;)
15:17 Carl Metropolitan The first thing you need to know about mesh bodies is that you don't have to have one.
15:17 Carl Metropolitan They look nice, but they are not required.
15:17 SaultSage Ah.
15:18 Carl Metropolitan There are also free ones out there you can experiment with.
15:18 Carl Metropolitan Clothes for Mesh bodies are usually designed to fit specific brands of mesh bodies.
15:18 Gronk Seriman In fact, you can never get rid of your classic body. You have to hide it in order to wear a mesh body over it.
15:19 Carl Metropolitan The last time I looked, for men the most common one was Gianni. I don't know how good it is. Just that it is popular. So that's not a recommendation.
15:19 Larky (larkylouz) But I have had some luck saving every alpha mask I get and using them to make mesh clothing fit my classic avatar. She's close to Maitreya, so that is part of it.
15:20 Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) I remember when mesh came out.
15:20 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Hi Phrynne.
15:20 Phrynne Hi.
15:20 Lightweaver Balan Hello Phrynne.
15:21 Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) I feel like a SL old lady.
15:21 Larky (larkylouz) I have talked to a guy who says that the freebie mesh bodies for male avis aren't great. The ones for women are okay. A few glitches, primarily the neck line that can't always be fixed, but...
15:21 Carl Metropolitan Maitreya is the most commonly used female mesh body.
15:21 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) Nice thing about Victorian wear. The choker.
15:21 Carl Metropolitan There is the Roth mesh body for men that's free.
15:21 Carl Metropolitan I know there are one or two others.
15:21 SaultSage Ah, thank you.
15:21 Carl Metropolitan I think there is an Altamura male body for free.
15:22 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) still tends to stick the body shape he made himself even if may be out of shape.
15:22 Sandie Harbour One advantage for picking a popular one like Maitreya is many folk design for it.
15:22 Lyn (lyn.navarita) Helping Haven has both gender free avatars in the stores.
15:22 Carl Metropolitan Yes. The choker. Mesh heads and Mesh bodies are most commonly made by different creators. Because of that, it can be hard to get a smooth transition at the neck.
15:22 Caissa McCarey BoM helps with that, though.
15:23 Gronk Seriman Remember, bodies do not necessarily, and usually don't come with a head. Makes things unnecessarily difficult, I feel.
15:23 Carl Metropolitan Yes. Helping Haven has great freebies.
15:23 Lyn (lyn.navarita) I learned mesh on a pair of free Altamura aivs.
15:23 Larky (larkylouz) I like the Sweets BOM body. It's free on the MP.
15:23 Lyn (lyn.navarita) They have their own store now and are getting more clothing support.
15:23 Sandie Harbour My head is not mesh.
15:23 Caissa McCarey And with that, you're just using one skin, so no trying to match head applier to body applier
15:23 Carl Metropolitan Because of the issue of visible seams, you may see a lot of women in SL wearing chokers.
15:24 Lightweaver Balan always wore them anyway.
15:24 Lyn (lyn.navarita) I used my system head for a long time.
15:24 Carl Metropolitan A lot of people wear system heads with mesh bodies.
15:24 Carl Metropolitan The heads tend to be more expensive.
15:25 Sandie Harbour I am to accustomed to Sandie's face to change to a mesh head
15:25 Lyn (lyn.navarita) All mesh is more expensive.
15:25 Lyn (lyn.navarita) I remember making and sharing clothes originally.
15:25 Carl Metropolitan Yes. That's hard to do for mesh. Unless you have someone who has the tools and skills to make them.
15:25 Lyn (lyn.navarita) Now the makers are planning on retiring off mesh profits.
15:26 Larky (larkylouz) It was the BoM and the ability to use my system head that convinced me to use a mesh body. I like my look!
15:26 Carl Metropolitan BoM means "Baked on Mesh"
15:26 Lyn (lyn.navarita) BoM has been wonderful.
15:27 Sandie Harbour I do not understand it.
15:27 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Mesh cannot reproduce Sandie's smile properly.
15:27 Lyn (lyn.navarita) I am so glad I hadn't deleted my classic clothes.
15:27 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) Just shine shows through.
15:27 Zaida Gearbox (zaida.gearbox) I can't find a child head that doesn't annoy the crap out of me.
15:27 Gronk Seriman To be specific, Sault, the term "Mesh" in SL means that something was built outside of SL in some 3D modeling software, then imported into SL. Any object you see can be mesh. Bodies are just more difficult, because they have to be"rigged" properly, too.
15:28 Elfbiter Skysmith (elfbiter) I have yet to find mesh clothes suitable for this body shape. Granted, I kind of stopped trying after too many disappointments.
15:29 Carl Metropolitan Try searching these blogs for notes about free and discounted mesh bodies:
15:29 Carl Metropolitan https://ryanschultz.com/
15:29 Carl Metropolitan https://fabfree.wordpress.com/category/mesh-avatars/
15:29 Carl Metropolitan https://virtualbloke.com/
15:29 SaultSage Great.
15:30 Carl Metropolitan Oh, and as far as external programs go, I believe most mesh clothing creators build the outfits in Marvelous Designer, and rig them in Blender.
15:31 Carl Metropolitan Lyn, can you pass Sault a LM for Helping Haven's freebies, too?
15:32 Carl Metropolitan We also have freebies here at Oxbridge but not much clothing at all.
15:32 Lyn (lyn.navarita) Ok. Anyone else?
15:32 Carl Metropolitan Okay. Next question?
15:32 lovejoy2199 Please, Lyn.
15:33 Gronk Seriman Yes, please, Lyn.
15:33 Larky (larkylouz) Yes, please, Lyn.
15:34 lovejoy2199 Thank you Carl. I have learned more about mesh for men in the last 15 minutes, then I have in years.
15:34 Carl Metropolitan I am glad we could help.
15:34 Carl Metropolitan I should get a mesh body myself someday so I know even more.
15:35 Carl Metropolitan Oh. One more thing. I can mention this since we are in an M-rated sim. Men's mesh bodies do not include genitalia. If you are into that sort of thing, you have to buy those elsewhere.
15:36 Phrynne And please do not put them on or test them in Oxbridge dressing rooms, thank you.
15:36 Gronk Seriman I made my own mesh body once. It turned out so bad I looked like a Star Trek transporter accident.
15:36 Caissa McCarey Some do have a non-functional option just so you can avoid looking like a ken doll, though.
15:38 Carl Metropolitan At least now they rez and derez on command. I remember when they all just were scripted to go transparent. So if you turned "View Transparent" on you saw everyone's junk as translucent red objects!
15:38 Carl Metropolitan Back in the very old days.
15:38 Sandie Harbour <-- covers her ears and hums
15:39 Larky (larkylouz) The invisible ones are still common. I ask people to take them off on a regular basis.
15:39 Caissa McCarey nods.
15:40 Carl Metropolitan Oh? I thought that was old technology now.
15:40 Caissa McCarey probably because they're cheaper and available at freebie places.
15:40 Carl Metropolitan Yes. The dreaded freenis!
15:41 Carl Metropolitan Time for the next question.
15:41 Carl Metropolitan Please.
15:42 Carl Metropolitan Well, if there are no more questions, we can close this class a bit early tonight.
15:42 Carl Metropolitan Thank you all for coming and for your questions and answers!
15:43 Andrea Jones (andreajonesms) I'm headed down to the House of Steam to play some steam punk music for about an hour. you are welcome to join us. Caledon Oxbridge Village (77,222,27)
15:43 Carl Metropolitan Next Sunday, we have the full Q&A With the Deans!
15:43 Gronk Seriman Thank you, Carl, Andrea!
15:43 Carl Metropolitan Thanks Andrea
15:43 Carl Metropolitan Goodnight everyone!
